Ted Flory began serving as Mayor of Bridgewater in January, 2017, following Mayor Hallie Dinkel's retirement. Prior to his election as Mayor, Ted served for 20 years on Bridgewater Town Council, serving initially as Chair of the Ordinance Committee, and for the majority of time as Chair of the Finance Committee. Prior to that, Ted served several years on Bridgewater's Parks and Recreation Commission.
Ted was born in China, to Church of the Brethren missionary parents, and lived five years in India all before the tender age of ten. Since returning from India, Ted has lived in Virginia, first in Bridgewater, then Charlottesville and Waynesboro, before enrolling at Bridgewater College in 1966. Ted has lived in Bridgewater since that time.
Ted graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1966, from Bridgewater College in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in Physics and from the University of Virginia in 1980 with a master's degree in Computer Science. Following graduation from Bridgewater College, Ted joined the faculty and staff at the College. In that role, Ted taught Computer Science courses and served as director of the college's Information Technology Center for nearly 30 years. For the last 15 years of his professional career, Ted worked as Lead Software Designer / Developer for Ellucian (formerly Datatel) in Fairfax. Ted retired from Ellucian in 2014.
Since retirement, Ted has enjoyed more time for reading, traveling, and sports (golf, tennis and racquetball, specifically). He is married to Mary Beth (Myers) Flory, has three grown children, and four grandchildren.
